Making a Difference as a CLSP

Certified Lactation Support Provider
A Certified Lactation Support Provider (CLSP) plays a crucial role in supporting families throughout their infant feeding journey as they collaborate with International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and other healthcare providers. Here are some ways in which CLSPs contribute to the field of infant feeding support.

CLSP Code of Conduct CLSP Scope of Practice

Education & Training

Provide essential education in breastfeeding, offering workshops and classes for healthcare professionals and the general public, enhancing community knowledge and awareness about lactation.

Outreach & Advocacy

Through community outreach, CLSPs raise breastfeeding awareness, collaborating with IBCLCs & healthcare providers in organizing events and educational sessions, broadening support for lactating families.

Prenatal Education

CLSPs assist in prenatal education, informing expectant parents about breastfeeding benefits and techniques, and guiding them towards professional lactation care for optimal outcomes.

Support Groups

CLSPs lead lactation support groups, offering a supportive space for parents to share experiences, gain guidance, and ensure referrals to healthcare professionals for specialized care.

Lactation Classes

Conduct lactation classes covering latch techniques, positioning, recognizing hunger cues, and addressing common challenges, and when to seek additional help from healthcare providers and IBCLCs, thereby enhancing parental breastfeeding knowledge and skills.

Common Concerns

Offer expert guidance to tackle typical breastfeeding challenges, including latching issues, minimizing discomfort, and effective breast pump usage. Your advice complements IBCLC's in-depth assistance, ensuring parents receive comprehensive support.

Collaboration Care

Collaborate with healthcare teams, including IBCLCs, nurses, midwives, and obstetricians, to ensure consistent messaging and support. This collaborative approach helps create a unified front in promoting and supporting lactation within healthcare settings.

Continuing Education

CLSPs engage in continuous learning to stay informed about the latest lactation research and best practices, enhancing their collaboration with healthcare teams and contributing to broader professional development on their own and as future IBCLCs.

"I have LOVED my GOLD Lactation Academy experience! I can't say enough about the engaging platform, the up-to-date information, and the relevance to day to day work as a lactation professional. Most of all, I appreciate that the information felt so focused on being a great lactation consultant. Though other courses I had sampled prioritize exam prep, I felt the GOLD course was instrumental in passing the exam with flying colors."
